...I think I'm one of the few people that believe that teenagers shouldn't be coddled, and I'm sure I'm going to get called a little cold for saying that.

I guess I just see teenagers enter the real world and not being very prepared since mommy and daddy treated them as the Perfect And Only Snowflake In The World. Yeah, there're some dangerous things and people in the world. It's called, well, Life. You interact with soceity and you take that chance every day.

The world can be an amazing place but it can also be ugly. When I have kids, I want them to be prepared and while I will love them with all my heart, they will need to fail and learn from their mistakes. No lies, no wool over the eyes.

This isn't really directed at anyone I know in particular, but I'll read news stories or FB/LJ posts. Perhaps some people do this on purpose to keep kids in line with their beliefs and values, or because they have a hard time accepting the face that their child grows up someday.

Judy is the Perfect Unique Snowflake, and will headbutt you if you do not agree.

Our 14-year-old, on the other hand, is an ass.

But see, if she can headbutt me, she's probably going to do okay. :)

Yeah, I don't think coddling is very effective either. Kids today need information, knowledge is power etc. Kids can be so cruel to each other and have to live with intolerance and hate speech. If I had known what I know today, I think I could have coped better in high school. I would have been able to tell off those assholes and help people. Because really, something had happened to them to make them assholes. When you learn that aggression pays off at an early age, chances are you're going to be that way.

I just wish bullying, suicides and shootings wouldn't happen so often as they do. The solution could even be as simple as saying to bullies: "Hey, be careful how you treat people otherwise they could snap and kill you."

When I have kids, I'm going to remind them that "You are the only one in charge of your emotions, and you alone have the decision to choose how you feel. Why let other people have power over you?"

Hell yeah. :)

I see why bullies exist. Some have broken homes, or some other problems. Some are probably just...well, mean. Let us turn to the wisdom of The Simpsons:

"Well, animals are not like people, Mrs. Simpson. Some of them act badly because they've had a hard life, or have been mistreated...but, like people, some of them are just jerks. Stop that, Mr. Simpson."

Oh gosh. I wasn't a high schooler that long ago (very very sad, but true)... and I felt the same even then! I grew up completely un-coddled, and finding out that some of my friends had their parents do everything for them (including clean their rooms and buy them almost anything they wanted) was ridiculous! And the friends who weren't allowed to take the bus alone because it was dangerous (over protective dipshit parents)... or I still have friends today that are afraid to come to Seattle because it's a "scary place."

They're the ones who basically victimize themselves because they never learned how to be safely alone anywhere. It's scary for them and also just stupid!

I think you're smart for wanting to bring any future children up with the right awareness. =)

*laughs* Oh god, Seattle, a scary place? Maybe in a section or two, but overall it's a fine city. Now LA, that has some scary parts.

Thanks! :) Sounds like we're on the same wavelength> :)
