Can anyone suggest a bank other than WaMu or Bank of America? I'm closing my WaMu account tomorrow because they're assholes and charged me $175.00 worth of overdraft fees.

don't go to wellsfargo.. I *hate* them... though I have continued to bank with them.... although... one time when I did complain they bent over backwards to help me.... but they have taken out up to $90 in overdraft fees...

see what wellsfargo does is... lets say you have 2 checks or debits waiting to be cleared and your account balance is currently $75. The first check is for $50.75 and the other is for $76.18. They will process the more expensive one first (even if the $50.75 was entered first) and charge you two over draft fees. I've seen it happen to everyone that I know that banks with them.. including myself.

And then, this summer Jen and I were at AX and she lost her wallet. She notified wells fargo and explained that the hotel room was on her debit card and asked them not to cancel the card but just to notify her if there was any activity. They verified that they would do that and she hung up. We found her wallet, card and all, and she was ready to go on her way. I suggested that she verify with wells fargo that everything was ok.. so she did... and they told her, "Yes ms. Fisher, it appears your card was cancelled per your request and a new one will be sent in 5-7 business days" Our hotel room was to be charged to that card ( about $500 or so cause Jen and her friends had been there for a few days) but they had cancelled the card and we got screwed.

Don't go to wellsfargo.

GEEZ. Okay, NOT going with Wells Fargo then...

Sorry to hear they screwed you. You'd think they would've bought you dinner first. :(

Try to join a credit union. No fees on their ATMs.

I was fond of Columbia Bank while I was living in Washington, partially because of the really cute teller that I always saw when I went to the bank... :D

I'm now with the highly impersonal Bank Of America, which I only like for the fact that it's everywhere. Personally, I'd just stick with whatever bank is closest to home (and has the cutest tellers), then link your checking to your savings with overdraft protection.

I've been banking with WaMu my whole life, and trust me, they've gotten over $200 from me for overdraft fees. But I didn't contest them because it says in their agreement policy that if you withdraw more money than is in your account, they penalize you $25 every time you withdraw from your account when you don't have any money in it. Trust me, I was fuming about it, but not at the bank. I was mad at myself because I should've kept a better eye on my account.

I think any bank you go to will charge you for overdrawing from your account; that's one of the ways they make their money.

BTW, have you looked into getting your savings account linked with your checking account so that if you overdraw from checking, it'll automatically take the extra from your savings so you avoid overdraft charges?

That's basically everything that I was going to suggest.

I think I'll just bite the bullet and stay with them. It *was* my mistake...still, it feels like I'm dealing with the fucking mafia or something. -_-

And nope, I have my savings at my credit union.

I had similar problems with both WaMu (only even more screwed up than that, I assure you), and BOA (back when they were SeaFirst they basically stole 300 bucks from me). I've been using BECU for the last 4 years with zero problems. I like them. And you don't have to work for boeing anymore to be a member. :D

I had $125 in overdraft fees one time. It wasn't my fault due to college loan screwing upmy account. I called WAMU and they gave me back the $125. I don't know what your situation is though.

Ben says Watermark Credit Union is a good place. I may switch to them.

I had a weird issue with overdraft fees, and I got almost all of them refunded since it wasn't my fault somebody elses check bounced.
