More computer fun.

So I like this. My BIOS recognizes that it's a 200GB hard drive. However, when I go to format the HD, it still only recognizes 130GB. Is this some problem with Win XP? Shouldn't the motherboard override that?

Plus, now that I've got a firewall up...I can't connect to the internet. The LAN light on my modem doesn't light up; so I'm not sure if that's something on my end or Speakeasy's end.

*twitches* Guess I'll get to go home tonight and get frustrated some more.

Check the jumpers on the Hard Drive, most HD's have a jumper to limit capacity to 135gb (approx 130gb formatted). This is for old school computers that don't have 64-bit (or 32-bit, I can't remember) addressing.

It's a brand spanking new hard drive...I'll have to dig around, the hard drive came with very little documentation. Maybe that's it, though (as far as the hard drive space). Thanks! :)

Also I know (working at Fry's and all) that for some reason XP gets picky with HDs over 130gb. I think if you get service pack two that fixes the problem though. At least, that's what I remember hearing. But it's definately an issue with XP

Yeah, XP can kinda be a bitch. Though there isn't an "XP with Service Pack 2" install that I can do, is there? Cause that might fix the problem right away.

At Fry's we sell OEM copies of XP pro and home that both come with service pack two, but beyond that I dunno. Pro only costs like $150 though.

I wonder if Microsoft would send me Service Pack 2 on CD? I already have XP Pro; I don't want to pay $150 just for SP2.

It's possible. Before you contact them though, see if you can download it from their website and then install it, restart, ect and see if that fixes it. If not, talk to their tech support or something.

Nope. As soon as I get online, I contract the worm, so I can't do that.

Easiest fix: Make it two separate drives, with one at about 130 and the other at about 60 (since the whole is never quite the sum of it's parts...my 160GB drives show up as 147 or so).

That's one of the weird things; I wouldn't mind making it a partition like that, but it (Win XP Pro) only recognizes 130GB total.

I got a pretty early copy of XP Pro, I want to say before even SP1 came out.

Yeah, the only "jumper" setting on the drive is something about if you're using SATA 2 or something, but I'm not so it's not a big deal for the jumper.

Heh, this is where I get the dumb consumer look on my face. :) The only Firewall that I know of is the actual software Firewall (are there hardware Firewalls?), and that's the one that comes with Win XP Pro. The motherboard I got from Nvidia has a Firewall, but of course it works with SP1 or above...which I don't have.

Well, I'm using the same cable I've always used, and my motherboard has an onboard Ethernet port. I'll check when I get home, but I'm pretty sure the light on the Ethernet port does come on.

There's only one spot on the modem where the Ethernet cable could plug into.

I might have to take my buddy's advice; put the old hard drive back in, install the new hard drive as a secondary drive (hopefully not difficult when dealing with IDE and SATA), put Win XP Pro on my new hard drive and update it, then switch 'em out again. Pain in the ass, but that might work.

But I can do more things and play more games on Windows. :) But yes, Apples are a bit easier to deal with.

*LOL* Ah, that's good stuff. :)

Well, as long as we stay educated, we'll be fine. I guess I just need more education. `^_^
